Packers' general manager Ted Thompson used the club's franchise tag on defensive tackle Corey Williams
By tagging Williams, the Packers earn the right to match the offer of any other team hoping to grab the free agent. Thompson does seem to have a preference for loading up on defensive lineman, so in that regard keeping Williams is consistent with his philosophy. But then again, Williams is a Mike Sherman holdover – one of very few left on the squad – and for that reason alone, I wouldn't have been surprised if Thompson would've let the market have its way with Williams.
I'm equally excited about the prospect of another year with Williams throwing elbows on the defensive front. That means last year's first round draft pick Justin Harrell will again be fighting an uphill battle for playing time in '08. But competition like that should, in (Thompson's) theory should produce the best play.
All I wanna is, when is the party...the Retreat is gon' be jumpin!!
